Merkley chickens out.

October 6, 2026 · Alternate Delegate position 2

SMITH Merkley

Why did a three-term incumbent choose to skip out? Political observers point to a clear strategy: hiding behind the shield of incumbency.

Relying on Status, Avoiding the Issues

In modern politics, dominant incumbents rarely see an upside in sharing a stage with a challenger. Jeff Merkley currently holds a massive structural advantage in a historically left-leaning state. By refusing to debate, Merkley's campaign is relying entirely on his "incumbent status" to coast to victory, actively trying to deny his opponent the media spotlight and free television airtime. More importantly, stepping onto a stage means answering uncomfortable, unscripted questions. Brock Smith has aggressively campaigned on tackling Oregon's bureaucracy, public safety, and the drug and addiction crises hitting local communities. By ducking the encounter, Merkley successfully sidesteps having to defend his record or answer for controversial federal policies in front of a live audience. He chose political self-preservation over public accountability.
